What is Freshman Start?
- Freshman Start provides opportunities for students to take Math 096 and
English 098 before Fall term begins. Who needs
to take Math 096 and/or English 098?
- Any student who did not
score 21 or higher on the ACT or 510 or higher on the SAT
in either
area.
- Freshman Start wants you placed in the right class and encourages students
to take UNR placement exams before Fall registration begins.
- For more information visit the University's Math
Placement site or English
Placement site.
- See Math 096 and English
098 on the University's preliminary Summer
Schedule.
Why is it important to do this now?
- Waiting until Fall puts students behind in their degree plans because
they cannot take the advanced classes they need until prerequisites have
been completed.
- Millennium monies do not pay for 096 or 098 classes. However, Millennium
can be applied to other Summer Session courses which would be reimbursed
at the beginning of the Fall semester!
- Concentration on one Math or English class when NOT taking another 9
credits is a positive educational endeavor.
- Freshman Start will help students make successful academic transitions
from high school to the university. Summer housing is available for this
program. Students will be oriented to the campus and be able to take advantage
of many fun Summer activities.
Fall term classes are
oversubscribed and students often cannot get into the 098 or 096 class
they need. By successfully completing Math 096
and/or English 098 in the Summer with Freshman Start, students guarantee
themselves a seat in the Fall classes for English 101 and/or Math 120/126.
